On my 5" grinders (basically a 4 1/2" grinder with a bigger motor so I can push it harder), I can get a LITTLE faster stock removal with an aluminum oxide grinding wheel. But aluminum oxide grinding wheels don't last nearly as long as zirconia flap wheels, and create much more dust. Flap wheels also cut cooler, which is important when sharpening.

For flap disc sanding, I would say get a 4.5, as you can easy hold it in one hand, whilst using your free hand to 'feel' to get a sweet finish.
